FAQs - frequently asked questions
Part 1. Questions on atheism and atheists
- What is atheism?
Atheism is a non-introduction into one's personal world outlook of supernatural beings (gods, a god), lack of belief into gods/a god/God.
- Is atheism a kind of religion?
No way. Atheism is not a religion because religion is a world perception based on idol (idols) worship, mostly the idols are called gods. The main characteristic of religiousness of some structure (organization) or world outlook is the proclaimed monopoly on the truth. Atheism doesn't assume existence of idols/gods and it doesn't declare its monopoly on the truth, that's why it's not a religion.
- Atheists are also believers, they just believe that God doesn't exist.
Atheists don't believe in the existence of a god. But from this presupposition it doesn't logically follow that that they believe there's no god. The latter is just a special case of the former. If you don't understand it means you missed Logic course at the school. There's a trend in atheism called strong or positive atheism, the followers of which proclaim there are no gods. This particular case of atheism shouldn't be equated to the atheism in the general case.
- What is the difference between atheism and scepticism then?
Atheism could be considered as a particular case of scepticism (in the area of religion) if we disengage ourselves from the existence of positive atheism. Positive atheists are not sceptics. All the rest are.
